I'm here at the hospital with Dad...
Today the doctors clarified that the MRI yesterday was to find out what is going on with Dad's liver, which is not working correctly. It's not putting the right proteins into his blood, which in turn is causing his blood to not hold onto the water it needs to. The water is then leaking into his body, causing the swelling.
They found nothing in the MRI, or on any other test thus far. They are waiting for results on a couple more tests, to rule out Hepatitis and another rare virus of some kind.
They have called in liver specialists who will be around some time today to help them figure out what's going on.
This is a big deal because they can't start treatment for the MDS until they know what's happening with the liver. Plus, the liver issues will determine what type of chemo and how aggressive to be.
SO, they are ordering a liver biopsy which is risky right now for Dad because he's not making normal blood and could internally bleed--but they'll watch it extremely closely. It'll be done tomorrow, or Monday (considering the holiday weekend), and then it'll help them determine if cancer has invaded his liver too...if so, they'll do intense chemo, quickly.
Either way they hope to get chemo started by Tuesday...they are anxious, really.
Also today he'll be getting two more units of blood and a unit of platelets. He's really exhausted today, probably because his blood is so depleted, again.
It's a pretty serious case, the doctors are puzzled and worried, so I can tell they're trying to get things done quickly...but at a hospital quick is relative.
Again, Dad sends love to all, and many thanks for all the love.

Uncle Jeff, I love you dearly and am praying for you and your family. I would like to come visit but don't know when that would be best. Watch out for the vampires and so called "specialists" they'll make a pin cushion of you! Do you have a radio so you can listen to your programs?
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs to Aunt Jeri and kids!
