Thursday's news

I was at the hospital this morning, so here's what's up...not much.

Dad is not really responding to anything, just sleeping. He held up two fingers when asked, but couldn't cough on command. He also did not really seem to recognize me when he looked at me.

He has had 4 1/2 Liters of fluid taken off him through dialysis. Today they didn't try to take any more off because his blood pressure is getting back to where it was when he first went into the hospital. They still filter his blood to take off the toxins, they just don't take off the fluid--I think they put fresh stuff in, but don't quote me on that. He looks very thin now, which makes him look even more sick. His legs finally look thin...more thin than they used to be even.

His liver, well, it's still playing around not deciding what to do. The bili went up a couple points today, and the other stuff didn't improve (it may have stayed about the same, I'm having a hard time recalling exactly what the doc said).

His kidneys put out very little yesterday...the same amount in 24 hours as a normal person puts out in 1. The liver docs still suggested finishing the full 7-day treatment. I agree. Give it a chance.

He is getting more platelets today. He's been bleeding more here and there, which shows they are low, but they also test them, and yeah, they're low.

We're still playing an excruciating waiting game. I can picture in my mind Dad getting better and slowly regaining strength, and smiling and hugging and laughing; that picture is more vivid than him not doing those things ever again, but it's also more familiar. Still, I hope.
