This is the medical stuff from today. I'll start with the top, and end with the feet.
Dad's Head: They are doing another CT scan today to make sure there are no hemorrhages in his brain causing some of the confusion.
He has been less responsive today, but still recognizes people.
Dad's Lungs: As mentioned, there is fluid in them. The doctors have increased the amount of oxygen he's on, and if this continues he may get to the point where they'd need to intubate him.
At this point we have told them not to intubate or resuscitate. If something improves elsewhere, that decision might change. Dad didn't want any heroics to save his life. He already told the doctors he lived a good life and he's not afraid to die.
Dad's Liver: The MRI today is to compare the liver now with how it was, and to see if there are any blockages/problems aside from the cancer that they can do something about to help it start working. Most likely results won't be in until tomorrow.
Dad's Kidney's: The kidney specialists have been called in now too. The kidneys are working as pumps better now than when he came in...good thing. Bad thing is they are not eliminating urea like they should be because of the liver, which is also getting into Dad's system and is contributing to his confusion. The ideal right now would be to put him on dialysis, but because of how invasive it is, and the risks involved, they can't do that right now.
Dad's Legs/arms/hands: They are very swollen and look painful.
His whole body is very jaundice, but we've been assured it doesn't hurt adults like it would a newborn. His little eyes are bloodshot, which is normal because of the chemo and low platelets (clotting factor in the blood).
Mom is holding up well, considering. She mentioned she's a little worn out after so many visits (they are so helpful, but emotionally draining too). In her behalf, I won't discourage anyone from coming, but try to keep your visit short--for Dad too, he's worn out today from so many things.
The doctors mentioned there are only 2 other cases in the world they can find that are like Dad's, so this is very unusual for his liver to be so involved. They assured us that they are still hopeful, but reality is that the odds are very stacked against Dad and that it's very grim. They did say it would be a time to allow family to come say goodbye...I agree; live with no regrets. I'm not ready to say goodbye, but if each day brings that closer, I'll say it.
And just so everyone knows, we don't think Dad has given up. He looks sick, and tired, but not done. We think he'll let us know. If or when that happens, we'll let you know.
Thanks for the love. Thank you SO much.

Jen...You are the best for sharing with us. I (Tim Miller) can't be there, but it still feels like I am close, through your postings.
ReplyDeleteTell that dang Uncle Jeff, I love him and am praying for all of you. But if that just sounds to typical and formal, then you can just tell him that, "Absence makes the fart go honda" is still my favorite joke of his.
I know he'll be laughing on the inside.
